Bhutanese staff at Perth Mint welcome King

King Jigme with Bhutanese Mint employees

The Perth Mint was honoured to host His Majesty the King of Bhutan at its iconic heritage-listed premises in East Perth. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck visited the Mint and took part in the Mint’s popular Gold Tour.

Hosted by Mint CEO Paul Graham and Deputy CEO Melanie Brown, King Jigme witnessed a live gold pour, admired the Mint’s collector coins and visited the Pink Diamond Room.

“It was an honour to guide His Majesty through the Mint, sharing the rich history of our 125 years of operation, exploring our innovative products that reach global markets, and delighting him with our exhibition and gold pour,” Paul Graham said.

The Perth Mint has more than 20 employees who are Bhutanese and His Majesty graciously made time to speak with them.

“To see our fantastic Bhutanese employees line the forecourt in their traditional dress to meet the King of Bhutan was truly a special experience for everyone,” Paul Graham said.

“It was wonderful to learn more about them, their culture and what this day meant to them.”

Accounts payable officer Bidhan Rana said it was an experience he will cherish forever. “For Bhutanese people, our King represents wisdom, compassion, and unity,” Bidhan said.

“Having him visit The Perth Mint was not only deeply personal but also humbling, as it shows his recognition of Bhutanese individuals no matter where they are in the world.

Accounts receivable officer Thinley Chenzom said it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to meet her King. “His Majesty is considered a living God in our country,” Thinley said.

“For him to graciously speak a few kind words to me and bless my yet to be born baby is an experience I will never forget as long as I live. “Long Live His Majesty, The King of Bhutan.”

Cleaner Pema Yangzom said the King’s visit will remained etched in her memory forever. “Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the privilege of meeting him up close at The Perth Mint,” Pema said.

“The visit was an unexpected gift offering a truly unique experience that every Bhutanese dreams of.

“To be so close to His Majesty, to listen to his touching words, and to experience his warmth firsthand was unforgettable.

“I walked away with a profound sense of pride and gratitude that will forever stand as a cherished reminder of His Majesty’s unwavering bond with us all.”
