The hits of ABBA pump wittingly along in the stage version of Mamma Mia giving audiences a fun filled night of music to remember.
I hadn’t seen Mamma Mia the musical before and as a long time ABBA fan I was ready for a sing along to my favourite songs.
Before the show started I apologised to those sitting next to me preparing them for the fate of me singing throughout the show but they didn’t mind as they were singing too.
The musical closely follows the story from the hit movie starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan but with a selection of Australia’s best musical talents on stage there’s no squirming from the average singing that was produced in the film, this cast do more than justice to the songs.
It’s a drama filled story set on a Greek Island and following the wedding plans of a young girl Sophie and her mother Donna.
By chance Sophie has never met her father and after reading her mother’s diary’s from around the time she was conceived she decides to invite the three possible fathers along to the wedding without her mother’s knowledge.
Drama abounds in the light-hearted story which makes for great entertainment with fabulous sets and costumes.
It really is a journey through the ABBA song collection and the up-beat musical utilises appropriate songs to complement the story.
There’s not many of us who don’t secretly harbour a love for a good ABBA song and by the finale everyone in the audience is dancing and singing along.
It’s a finale so good I didn’t want it to end and when you walk out of theatre you feel good.
If you need a dose of good times, fun, laughter and a great sing along to all your favourite ABBA songs don’t miss Mamma Mia playing at Crown Theatre until 1 July.
