A field of 57 artworks by 60 of Western Australia’s finest artists has been shortlisted for the Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape with a prize pool of $24,500. This prestigious competition continues to highlight the exceptional talent within the state, with a selection of artists from 50 different areas across WA from Broome to Bicton, shortlisted for the 2024 accolades.
The prize, established by the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia (RASWA) in 1974, has grown in prominence and serves as a significant platform for both emerging and established artists. The first prize is a substantial $20,000 and remains non-acquisitive, providing the winning artist the opportunity to sell their work at the exhibition.
RASWA Chief Executive Officer Robyn Sermon expressed her excitement about the breadth and quality of submissions for the 2024 competition. “We are thrilled to witness such a remarkable array of high-caliber artworks this year,” she said. “The diversity of perspectives on presented through this competition enriches our cultural tapestry and offers a fabulous reflection of our state’s artistic talent.”
Perth Royal Art Prize Curator Sandra Murray commended the finalists for their innovative interpretations of the landscape theme. “The selection panel were impressed by the artworks submitted and I look forward to presenting an outstanding exhibition of the finalists’ works,” she noted.
The 2024 Perth Royal Art Prize offers four distinct awards: First Prize of $20,000, the Emerging Artist Award, and two Highly Commended awards. This year’s selection panel was comprised of Dr Barbara Bolt – WA artist and Professorial Fellow, The University of Melbourne; Wade Taylor – highly regarded WA artist; and Sandra Murray – Art Prize Curator and Independent Curator and Arts Consultant, assessing all works.
All artworks will be available for public viewing and purchase, providing artists a valuable opportunity to connect with new audiences and potential buyers. The exhibition will be held at the Wilkinson Gallery at the Claremont Showground from July 13 to July 21, with free daily admission and ample parking. The winners will be announced at a special event on Friday 12 July 2024.
